Getting to Know: Orientation Frommer

Visitor Information--Information is available at three locations maintained by the Azienda Provinciale di Turismo (APT): a kiosk at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (tel. 06-6595-6074), a kiosk in Stazione Termini (tel. 06-360-04-399), and a kiosk and administrative headquarters at Via Parigi 5 (tel. 06-4889-9253). The headquarters are open Monday to Friday from 8:15am to 7:15pm (Sat to 2pm). The office at the airport and the one at the Stazione Termini are open daily from 8:15am to 7:15pm, but we've never found these locations to be great resources.

More helpful, and stocking maps and brochures, are the offices maintained by the Comune di Roma at various sites around the city, with red-and-orange or yellow-and-black signs saying Comune di Roma--Punti di Informazione Turistica. They're staffed daily from 9am to 6pm, except the one at Termini (daily 8am-9pm). Here are the addresses and phone numbers: in Stazione Termini (tel. 06-4890-6300); in Piazza dei Cinquecento, outside Termini (tel. 06-4782-5194); in Piazza Pia, near the Castel Sant'Angelo (tel. 06-6880-9707); in Piazza San Giovanni, in Laterano (tel. 06-7720-3598); along Largo Carlo Goldoni (tel. 06-6813-6061), near the intersection of Via del Corso and Via Condotti; on Via Nazionale, near the Palazzo delle Esposizioni (tel. 06-4782-4525); on Largo Corrado Ricci, near the Colosseum (tel. 06-6992-4307); on Piazza Sonnino in Trastevere (tel. 06-5833-3457); on Piazza Cinque Lune, near Piazza Navona (tel. 06-6880-9240); and on Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore (tel. 06-4788-0294).

Enjoy Rome, Via Varese 39, near the train station (tel. 06-445-1843; www.enjoyrome.com), was begun by an English-speaking couple, Fulvia and Pierluigi. They dispense information about almost everything in Rome and are far more pleasant and organized than the Board of Tourism. They'll also help you find a hotel room, with no service charge (in anything from a hostel to a three-star hotel). Summer hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 7pm, and Saturday 8:30am to 1:30pm; winter hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 1:30pm and 3:30 to 6pm.
